Last month The first arthroscopic surgery on a rhino was performed in South Africa. The operation took place at Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital in Pretoria.

A young rhino bull was fortunate, narrowly surviving a poaching onslaught.  He was shot recently by poachers, who now prefer shooting in the leg to disable and stop rhinos in their tracks. This wounded bull was suffering from shattered bone fragments in his knee as well as crippling.

Efforts such as these document the desperate measures being taken to ensure the survival of a species on the brink of extinction.
