An elephant was given medical attention last week after he was found by vets from Aware Trust Zimbabwe in Mana Pools National Park. The elephant which is believed to be about 25 year old, is alleged to be the latest victim of poachers seeking ivory.
It is believed that the bullet had been lodged in the elephant’s head for several weeks before he received medical attention.
“We suspect he was shot in head first and turned to flee and the poacher put a bullet in his side.” Said Dr Lisa Marabini.
The elephant was lucky as the bullet missed the brain by mere centimeters. This incident comes at a time when the safety of these gentle giants has been compromised by an ever increasing demand for ivory.
