The African Hippo Hippopotamus Amphibius is regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. It is credited with causing more deaths in Africa than any other wild animal. What is interesting is that many of the accidents involving hippos that result in the death of a human often see very little direct damage to the body and from this we assume that drowning is the ultimate cause of the death very likely assisted by panic and shock.
In the attached footage we see a Hippo chasing a speed boat in the Chobe river. This part of the Chobe is blessed with incredible populations of wildlife and with hotels and lodges on the increase in this area combined with the day trips from Victoria Falls which is only one hours drive away by coach there is a large number of speed boats on the river at any one time. It is surprising in fact with these numbers of boats that there are relatively few incidents of Hippo and other wildlife showing real aggression towards them. In fact in general the wildlife in this area of the Chobe seems pretty relaxed around the human spectators and seems to have accepted them as part of everyday life.
Every now and then though it is a display like this that reminds us that we are visitors and to mind our step.
