A recent CNN article in their online magazine listed a number of destinations that the writer expects to change in the near future due to some reason or other. The Victoria Falls was selected as one of these destinations and the reason cited was the new International Airport that should be completed here by the end of 2015. The new airport is expected to see the arrival of new airlines flying directly to the destination including direct flights from the Middle East and Europe. Will this have such a changing effect on the tourism experience at Victoria Falls ? It is unlikely to change much in the short and medium term the increase in access to the destination will certainly be welcome and should increase arrival numbers quite dramatically. However the same things that attract many tourists to this destination at present need to be maintained and protected. Zimbabwe and Zambia both have a rich heritage of wildlife based tourism and it is hoped that with this experience and some determination to maintain the high standards, that the incredible natural experiences currently available in Victoria Falls will remain.
In the long term – well what remains to be seen is the region’s management of the increased interest which will likely result in the building of new hotels and infrastructure.
