Voted in the top ten ‘Most Romantic Places in the World’ by Conde Nast and in the Tatler top 101 Hotels in the World and most recently voted the 3rd Best Beach Property in Africa 2013 in the Good Safari Awards and a finalist in 2012. From the construction and the staff to integration within the local community, there is literally nowhere else like it.
Kaya Mawa first opened in 2000 after a six year building project.
In 2008 the lodge was bought by Nick Brown and James Lightfoot, closed in 2009 for a complete rebuild and reopened in 2010.
Each room is individually designed in partnership with Katundu Textiles, a workshop set up on the island to empower single mothers. All the workforce come from the neighbouring villages and have been trained on site. The result – a uniquely stunning lodge with a feeling of contemporary rustic whilst ultimately chic.
