Local professional golfers will finally return to the battlefields, after several months of inactivity, when the Hwange Open tees off on October 24 at the Colliery. The event, which is under the Zambezi Tour, is sponsored by Hwange Colliery Company Limited and the Hwange Open Organising Committee.
The tournament has a US$15 000 purse and will have a Pro-Am on the first day which will be followed by 54 holes of strokeplay from October 25-27. Registration for players closes this Friday. Local professionals had only five domestic tournaments this season.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe amateur golf team will take part in the All-Africa Games Golf Championships in Swaziland today. Christian Mbanga is to captain the side that includes top amateurs Clive Nguru, Biggie Chibvuri and Thembelani Mvundla.
“We are definitely going out there to win, this time we have got a very strong team, we are all on top of our game and if we play well then we have a chance to beat South Africa,” said Mbanga.
