Canoeing on the Kafue River in Zambia

A forty year old Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) officer based in Mumbwa has drowned in the Kafue River after falling off a canoe.

The victim identified as Clever Mwashingabwe, is a ZAWA officer who was stationed at Chunga Lodge.

Mumbwa District Commissioner Sunday Shamabanse said the officer was in the company of his friends when he met his fate. The three were trying to cross over to the other side when Mr Mwashingabwe fell off the canoe as he was suspected to have been dozing.

He said the incident happened on Thursday around 19:00 hours. The ZAWA officers only managed to retrieve the body on Sunday around 07:00 hours.

Mr Shamabanse added that the body has been buried in Ngabwe village in Mumbwa District.

This is an extremely unfortunate incident and our thoughts are with his family and friends.
