ChessA mini-sports festival awaits Livingstone residents and visitors during this month end’s United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly in Livingstone.

A whole horde of local and international competitions are lined-up for Zambia’s tourism capital.

Southern Province sports development coordinator Kennedy Mubanga said in an interview from Livingstone yesterday that the events are aimed at promoting unity and peace among sportsmen and women.

The UNWTO which will be co-hosted by Zambia and Zimbabwe will run from August 24 to 29.

“Some Zambian athletes will compete against their Zimbabwean counterparts in many activities.

“The events will be held for entertainment and to also promote competition amongst sportsmen and women,” Mubanga said.

On the cards are school boys and girls football tournaments, which will also see the deaf and intellectually challenged people competing.

football-lessonsThere will also be Livingstone community and school games in table tennis, badminton, chess and darts tournaments.

Other events are netball, tug-of-war, karate, boxing, half marathon, Mr Tourism Iron man body building and wheelchair basketball.
