Victoria Falls Marathon

Victoria Falls Marathon

More than 1 500 local and foreign athletes are expected to take part in the Victoria Falls marathon this Sunday, 14th July 2013.

Expectations are high that this year’s Victoria Falls marathon will be a great success ahead of the UNWTO General Assembly to be held in the resort town next month.

Sponsors of the event have expressed optimism that there will be fireworks on Sunday as young and old athletes troop into the race field.

The International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) certified marathon presents a full 42.2km race, 21.2km half marathon run and a 5km fun run.

IAAF certified marathon’s route offers a unique tourist opportunity to runners as it meanders over the Victoria Falls bridge into neighbouring Zambia before turning back to enter the Zambezi National Park and ending in the suburb of Chinotimba.

It is this distinct nature of the Victoria Falls marathon that has made it a tool to promote and market Zimbabwe as a top and safe tourist destination.

We have included a couple of refresher points for you that will also be available at registration in case you need to check for something.

Please look out for directional signage, particularly on the full marathon where there are two laps – and the ‘third lap’ is to the finish. Refer to the map.

As the route is in a National Park, you will see armed Park’s staff for your safety. If you are running – and you see any big game (elephant/buffalo etc…) – STOP and wait for it to pass.

At the Victoria Falls Primary School on the Kazungula road.

FIRST AID
There will be a roaming ambulance (MARS) – if you are in difficulty, stop and let a fellow runner know to advise a staff member of the next water-station where you are.

There is also a sweep-vehicle at the end.

WATER STATIONS
There are regular water points along the route. The first one is at approximately 5km due to the route going over the VICTORIA FALLS BRIDGE where we are unable to put water point on there.

There will be a drop off TRAILER at the start for your kit bags.

DO NOT leave valuables inside.

The trailer will be taken to the finish line.
