More than 1 500 local and foreign athletes are expected to take part in the Victoria Falls marathon this Sunday, 14th July 2013.
Expectations are high that this year’s Victoria Falls marathon will be a great success ahead of the UNWTO General Assembly to be held in the resort town next month.
Sponsors of the event have expressed optimism that there will be fireworks on Sunday as young and old athletes troop into the race field.
The International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) certified marathon presents a full 42.2km race, 21.2km half marathon run and a 5km fun run.
IAAF certified marathon’s route offers a unique tourist opportunity to runners as it meanders over the Victoria Falls bridge into neighbouring Zambia before turning back to enter the Zambezi National Park and ending in the suburb of Chinotimba.
It is this distinct nature of the Victoria Falls marathon that has made it a tool to promote and market Zimbabwe as a top and safe tourist destination.
