December Decadence

Beautiful suede thong, sterling silver and antique wooden seed bead necklace by Kelly Landrey.

The untying of a bow, the rustle of Christmas wrapping, the soft unfolding of tissue and your Christmas wish is revealed… or so we hope! We’ve been busy creating, selecting and gift wrapping special pieces from The Ndau Collection for you lucky receivers all month (with the help of a few subtly hinted suggestions), so we can only assume everyone has been very nice or rewardingly naughty this festive season!

For those of you looking to gift a special someone with an exceptional, unique gift, we thought we’d give you a little help from some experts – our designers! We’ve asked them to select what they’d like to find in their stocking this year…

If you are unable to see the images in this newsletter, please click here to view online.

Designer’s Christmas stocking wishes!

Reworked original Masaai collar, bound in sterling silver.

Kelly Landrey’s asked if she could please choose 5 items as 4 is too little and who could say no!! Her choices are 2 new pieces from her Masaai collection, earrings by Joe with pearls and horn and some pure gorgeousness from Tato and Dev – a girl can never have enough butterflies and tanzanites in her life after all!

Sterling silver croc skin buckles by Devon Stewart.

Devon Stewart’s choice is anything from his croc range – what more could a person ask for at Christmas – pure decadence!

Raw facetted aquamarine and sterling silver necklace.

Gunieafowl feather and sterling silver earrings by Kelly Landrey.

Vintage ivory and pheasant feather necklace by Devon Stewart.

Words in flight butterfly ring.

Tato Louizidis has fallen in love with Kelly’s new guineafowl earrings (yes, he lived a happy life in Jackie Cuffley’s garden until the end of his days and has now returned as beautiful jewellery!) and Devon’s vintage ivory and feather necklace. She would also be very happy to find her new butterfly ring and aquamarine necklace wrapped up this Christmas!

Silver bound vintage ivory pendant on leather thong.

Woven disk and sterling silver earrings by Kelly Landrey.

Elephant hair and sterling silver unisex bangle by Devon Stewart,

Amethyst and copper ring by young Ndau silversmiths.

Joe Mutoko has chosen a copper and amethyst ring by the young Ndau silversmiths, his silver bound vintage ivory pendant on leather thong, Kelly’s Masaai wicker earrings and and Devon’s stunning elephant tail hair and sterling silver bangle – for men and women!

Double wing sterling silver cuff by Tato Louizidis.

Peacock feather earrings by Devon Stewart,

Croc belly cuff with silver and aquamarines by Joe Mutoko.

Red snake bead collar by Kelly Landrey.

Christie Brookstein has also battled to choose, but has settled on Tato’s double wing sterling silver cuff, a croc belly, silver and aquamarine cuff by Joe Mutoko and peacock feather earrings by Devon Stewart and finally a red snake bead collar by Kelly Landrey.

The Ruoko Report

Copper hair pin by Gift Sithole

The Ruoko Project is full steam ahead with wonderful creations coming out from everyone – including new mosaic signage by Sipho (as seen above Matsimela at Elephant’s Walk)!

We are especially proud of our own Gift Sithole – he has been featured as one of the top artisans in Zimbabwe in a newly published book “Craft” – and this was before he even started making jewellery! It’s so exciting and rewarding to see local craft and most importantly, one of our team celebrated in print.

And thank you to all the Ruoko team who have been assisting this month in putting together the exhibitions for The Jafuta Heritage Centre – now open and manned by The Ruoko team and Elephant’s Walk staff, so come and take a look!

The Ruoko Project

Fashion Focus

Instead of looking at a current trend, we decided to show you some special clients who’re wearing Ndau and starting a trend Ndau style! And yes, before you ask, we had to custom make it to fit him…

Tendai “The Beast” Mtawarira (Springbok rugby player) with his gorgeous baby Talumba and equally gorgeous wife Kuziva, wearing a silver croc cuff bangle by Devon Stewart.

Read more about The Beast visiting Victoria Falls in his interview withThe Zambezi Traveller newspaper or on their online site.

Turquoise Temptation

Sterling silver set amethyst and hippo tooth pendant on thong by Devon Stewart.

Onyx, sterling silver and leather thong bangle by Joe Mutoko.

ruby and sterling silver ring by Joe Mutoko.

Copper and turquoise bangle.

This month’s birthstone is turquoise – a solace for the spirit and well-being for the body. It’s viewed as a purification stone that dispels negative energy and protects against environmental pollutants – something we all need!

For those of you gifting from the zodiac side, Sagittarians have amethyst and labradorite as their star stones and Capricorns onyx and ruby.

Upcoming Events and Ndau News

Copper, croc tail and horn cuff

  • Thank you to all of our new and old clients that visited us at the ZADS Fair in Lusaka and helped to make it the most successful outing yet for us! We love that you love our product and we’ll keep on bringing you more!
  • The end of year is always a time of change and at The Ndau Collection, we have our share. In the new year, we have a movement in the designer line up.
  • Devon and Tato are moving back to Harare to start their own studio and wish them all the luck in the world – especially since we’ll still be carrying their product in-store under their own brand names! They’ll be carrying The Ndau Collection in Harare, so it’s a great expansion on both our sides. We can’t wait to see what will be coming from Harare and we know it’s going to be a huge success for this talented duo.
  • After 5 wonderfully creative years, Kelly Landrey has decided it’s time to take a look at the rest of the world and so will be leaving The Ndau Collection team. Kelly has been part of the heart of Ndau for a long time now and we will miss her incredibly beautiful creations, but we wish her all the best in her travels. We’ll be looking forward to hearing of her adventures and seeing her incredible finds and photos from all corners of the globe. Kelly, thank you from everyone on The Ndau team for the inspiration and gorgeousness you have created with us – wel love you! We promise to carry on with the high standards of design that you’ve set and make you proud!
  • With these changes, Christie Halsted will now become a full time designer for The Ndau Collection and has already finished her first two stories – we’ll be featuring these in the new year, so don’t miss the January newsletter. Christie H is a passionate co-owner of Ndau and has years of experience in design, be it ceramic, furniture, jewellery or interiors and the new pieces look incredible – can’t wait to see more.
  • Ndau’s other co-owner Gail van Jaarsveldt has created a new range, African Renaissance, under the Ndau umbrella, that she will be launching in conjunction with the opening of The Jafuta Heritage Centre at Elephant’s Walk. Her passion for African craftsmanship and heritage is shown in this one of a kind collection and as Gail can never stop being creative, we know we’ll see in the studio every time she’s here!
  • Christie Brookstein will also be helping out on the jewellery design side, as well as continuing with the leather design, so some great new collaborations will be coming through and Joe Mutoko will continue to build on his great start as a stand-alone designer. We’ll have some new exciting guest designers down the line, so watch the upcoming newsletters for more info on this.
  • The jewellery studio reopens on the 3rd January 2012 and the leather studio on 16th January 2012.
