Botswana is well known for having some of the best wilderness and wildlife areas on the African continent. The experience from the Okavango Delta to Chobe National Park, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park to Central Kalahari Game Reserve just to mention afew provides landmark experience of what the wild had to offer. With over 17% of Botswana’s land set-aside for national parks and game reserves the experience in this landlocked country cannot be overstated. A look from the lush green of the Okavango Delta in the north to the red desert dunes in the south, great areas of wilderness have been carefully preserved to offer visitors an opportunity to experience nature at its very best; to feel a sense of solitude; to see an incredible variety of wildlife species and to enjoy the prolific birdlife.
The organization mandated to foresee consistent development of this industry, Botswana Tourism Organization (BTO) continues to be involved in developing partnership and support for private investors who venture in this industry. Responding to a questionnaire from this publication, the organization CEO- Myra Sekgororone affirmed that through their Investment Department the company is assisting and facilitating potential and existing tourism investors. She further expressed that BTO is playing its role in facilitating Joint Ventures with individuals and communities. Investment promotion is in line with our product and geographic diversification in tourism strategies. The organization however requires private investors to venture more in this industry by increasing tourism facilities and products country wide, new products and innovation, increased employment, benefits to communities and growth in contribution to the economy, this the CEO notes will help in continued growth of the industry.
In Botswana, more is in the offing within the tourism industry; a new concept is in the offing for foreign tourists, local tourists and investors alike. The upcoming development in the Northern part of the country is set to take the industry buy storm. The landmark known as Bridgetown will provide another angle to the way we view tourism.
The resort which is located in Kasane- border town that provides a meeting point for Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia will allow visitors to enjoy tourism opportunity presented by each country. Apart from this magnificent touch to tourism, the resort offers an investment opportunity for investors wishing to participate in home ownership in Botswana.
“The Bridgetown experience is a very creative project which could ‘niche’ in a different product offering for the Kasane and Chobe area. The ownership model is admirable and gives Batswana an opportunity for meaningful participation,” acknowledges the BTO – CEO. She further affirmed that this concept will serve as a role model and an example of what the organization is talking about on the need for creativity, innovation to diversify historical product.
The Bridgetown concept offers an opportunity to diversifying tourism products as the country seeks to move ahead of its competitors by adding more to the traveler’s itinerary. To crown this, I quote January-McLean who said “a tourist to the country should not only know about its wildlife, but should be able to spice up that experience it with its people, culture and heritage.” This precisely what Bridgetown is offering.
