DELTA beverages have signed up to bankroll all of Zimbabwe’s home Test matches this international season as the company continues to rekindle its long standing marriage with the sport.
Having sponsored the recent triangular series that also included Australia and South African “A” sides through Coca Cola, they have also financed the staging of the four-day games against Australia and will sponsor Zimbabwe’s Test team in the four Tests home and away.
After years away from sport due to a biting economic crunch the beverage manufacturers have returned to take over sponsorship of most sporting disciplines.
Their return to cricket was marked last year by their sponsorship of the Castle Logan Cup, Zimbabwe’s first class tournament which runs over eight months.
Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Ozias Bvute confirmed the development but would not be drawn into discussing the figures involved.
“We are happy that Castle has signed up to sponsor the Test team and the upcoming home series against Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand,” said Bvute.
As Bangladesh grace Zimbabwe’s return to Tests with a one-off match in a Harare, Castle will sponsor the much-awaited match.
After Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand will both tour Zimbabwe to play a one-off Test each and five One-Day-Internationals.
Delta’s involvement with sponsorship of Zimbabwean sport also saw them this year recommence their relationship with football by taking over sponsorship of the Premier Soccer League and also bankrolling the National Rugby League through their brand Lion Lager.
Again through Castle, Delta will splash US$2 milion over two years in the top-flight football league to rekindle memories of the years when they were a dominant force in Zimbabwean sport.
Delta’s previous experience in sponsoring cricket, particularly Tests, proved to be an advantage over rivals who were prepared to sponsor the sport. — Staff Writer.
