WHAT’S HAPPENING IN VIC FALLS & KASANE
GREEN TOURISM SERVICES –
Thank you so much for coordinating such a successful Regional Tourism Organization for Southern Africa (RETOSA) meeting on cross border tourism, with industry players on Thursday, 23 June,2011.
The Vic Falls crowd was the best in all the meetings I have hosted on this study. We have gone through a lot in the last few years but I believe the industry and the players in Zimbabwe will come out of the woods if we continue to work together in the same spirit exhibited during the meeting.
Please convey my sincere appreciation to all the industry players who set aside their busy schedules to attend to the meeting to share their experiences on cross border tourism and strategies on the establishment of a free trade area for tourism services in the Southern African Development Community. We are preparing the report on the issues raised. However, we feel we might not have captured all the pertinent issues and would like to request for written submissions from the participants on issues they feel strongly about or anyone who can help us recapture the key issues. This can be conveyed through this email address.
Once again thank you so much and to all the Vic Falls players well done!!!!
My best regards, Rose Mukogo Green Tourism Services
This is our opportunity to forward written submission to the coordinators of the research. The deadline for submissions is Sunday 3 July 2011. email@example.com
VICTORIA FALLS – Residents of Victoria Falls take pride in cleaning their town
Environment Africa, The Victoria Falls Green Fund, the Victoria Falls Municipality and the Hwange District Development Fund successfully organized a Clean Up Victoria Falls campaign on Saturday 25 June 2011. The clean up was sponsored by the Victoria Falls Green Fund through funding raised from the green dollar initiative and green dollar monthly contributions from companies. The clean up kicked off at 8am in the morning at more than 42 different sites. The objective of the Cleanup which was held under the theme “Keep Victoria Falls Clean: Stop indiscriminate dumping of waste” was to conscintise the Victoria Falls community on the importance of sustainable living practices that help in creating a litter free environment. The clean up was supported by members of the Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe, residents of the low and high density areas, tour operators and government departments. Clean up teams from Vic Falls Safari lodge, Elephant Hills Hotel, A Zambezi, Rainbow Hotel Shearwater, Mapopoma among others covered the whole of parkway drive from the Zambezi National Park entry to town. Victoria Falls Hotel, The Kingdom Hotel and Avis worked on the road from the border to the Trading post in town. The companies operating from the industrial area cleaned along Pioneer road to the Ambula roundabout. These included Wild Horizons, A & K, Europe Car Rental, Dabula, and Ambula. One hundred and sixty school children from eleven schools around Vic Falls worked hard to clean the rubbish around Busi shopping centre. The children also took the opportunity to educate the owners of shops around to take responsibility for the waste that is dumped around their premises. The Victoria Falls Eco Rangers Children ‘s club had more than 50 members cleaning the stretch from CHOGM Park going all the way up to the hospital road turn off. In the low density area CANSAF and Wilderness Safaris led a team of residents to remove rubbish along West drive all the way into town. The support from ZIMRA and CAAZ was very amazing as they came out in big numbers to clean the stretch into town all the way from Masuwe bridge. This stretch is usually littered with waste from the Victoria Falls Dumpsite. Residents in wards 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 also cleaned hot spots in their wards. The Victoria Falls Municipality waste management section took the campaign very seriously as this is their core business and should be doing this more often. They provided three trucks for use during the clean up. Eight other bukkies were provided by companies. Our registration forms showed a total of 664 people who participated in the clean up on Saturday.
The closing ceremony was graced by His Worship the Mayor of Victoria Falls Councilor Nkosilathi Jiyane at Busi Shopping centre. He thanked all the companies present for participating in the clean up and expressed Council ‘s support in ensuring that waste is collected from resident’s premises and taken to the dumpsite. The Mayor also stated that the Municipality is in the process of fencing off the dumpsite and managing it like a proper landfill site. He called upon residents , companies and the Municipality to make this campaign an ongoing exercise. 15 school children from Chinotimba, Chamabondo, Kings, Vic Falls Education Centre, Elite, Mosi Secondary School, Dadani Vocational Training College and Oasis Christian Academy recited well researched poems and speeches that encouraged the Victoria Falls Community to take up the challenge of looking after the environment in Victoria Falls. The winning POEM was by a student from Chamabondo Primary School. The organizers of the event would like to thank the following institutions for supporting this great community initiative.
