Victoria Falls Mountain Bike Challenge 2011

From the base of Elephant Hills Hotel, in Victoria Falls – competitors will cycle over three days in different areas of this beautiful region. Each night you will be in complete comfort in your hotel room, with access to swimming pools, maybe a round of golf, or pop into town in the afternoon and do some sight seeing or curio shopping.

Day One (Approx 90km)
Will comprise of a distance of approximately 90km, with the route going along the top of the Gorge (famous for whitewater rafting), on bush tracks and some pathways – all on dirt with small sections of sand. There will be great views down into the gorge on some areas, and the likelihood of seeing some game along the way. Two refreshment stations are posted approximately 30km apart.

Breakfast and refreshments en route included, as well as dinner at the hotel on the last night.

Day Two (Approx 100km)
Ride again departs from Elephant Hills Hotel and heads out of Vic Falls in a different direction, going away from the river into a private concession, the area through which the cyclists go today will have some game viewing opportunities and cyclists will be fully briefed of the associated dangers at the dinner the night before.

The ride goes along some secondary roads and then hits more Kalahari sand, before coming out near the Vic Falls airport and then riding through some more communal land with the final legs going through some Forestry and National parks before ending at the Elephant Hills hotel. Distance of this Ride will be approximately 100km’s with again 2 refreshment tables en route.

Breakfast and refreshments en route included, as well as dinner at the hotel.

Day Three (Approx 80km)
We transfer you and your bikes, to the Kazungulu border a distance of 80km to commence the race. Today, you will be cycling along the edge of the Upper Zambezi River – in the Matetsi Game Reserve and the Zambezi National Parks (rangers will be posted periodically to keep a look out for game). Some of the tracks will take you away from the shoreline of the river.. and other sections you will have fantastic views of the Zambezi.

The race finishes on day 3, with a celebratory dinner at the Elephant Hills Hotel where the prizes will be handed out.

Breakfast and refreshments en route included, as well as a banquet dinner at the hotel.

Total distance travelled is estimated to be in the region of 270km.

GPS co-ordinates and maps will be available prior to the event, and each day will be timed.
