Trade and tourism ties between Zambia and Malawi will be given a boost next month when Proflight Zambia begins a three-times-a-week service between the Lusaka and Lilongwe capitals. The new route, which will be launched on June 4, will be the first international destination for the airline, which already flies to nine domestic points in Zambia, including Lusaka, Livingstone, Ndola and Mfuwe.

“Proflight Zambia has grown from a solid base and is now looking forward to expanding its services to link with our neighbours in Malawi,” said the airline’s Director of Government and Industry Affairs Capt. Philip Lemba. “We expect that the new three-times a week service will boost trade and tourism ties between the two countries, with all the economic benefits that brings.”

Flights to the Malawian capital will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, departing from Lusaka at 15:30 and arriving in Lilongwe at 17:10. The return flights leave Lilongwe on the same days at 17:55, arriving back in Lusaka at 19:35.

The service also provides seamless connections to and from Emirates flights, which arrive in Lusaka from Dubai at 14:25 and depart from Lusaka for Dubai at 21:25 daily.

Return fares from Lusaka to Lilongwe start from around KR2,000 and will operate initially with Proflight’s 29-seater Jetstream 41 aircraft.

The Atlas uses satellite images, high resolution photographs, illustrative text and graphics to present various issues in the Zambezi basin, which encompasses part of eight countries — Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Atlas presents the wide range of water resources and other natural resources in the Zambezi basin, and their significance, as well as socio-economic and cultural aspects.

However, the satellite images show that the basin has undergone major environmental changes in the past 20 years.

These include land degradation, loss of forests, and expansion of urban and mining areas as well as the spread of alien plant species.

Zambezi River Basin Atlas of the Changing Environment, the first of its kind in the basin and southern Africa, is a collaborative initiative with the objective of providing scientific evidence about changes that are taking place in the natural resources and the environment.

The atlas was produced for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Water Division, the Interim Secretariat of the Zambezi Watercourse Commission (ZAMCOM), and Zambezi River Basin stakeholders, by the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC) through its environment institute, the Musokotwane Environment Resource Centre for Southern Africa (IMERCSA) and GRID-Arendal, both collaborating centers of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The Atlas supports initiatives of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) such as the Africa Atlas of Our Changing Environment and the Africa Water Atlas.

The Zambezi River Basin Atlas of the Changing Environment identifies climate change and population growth as major drivers of environmental change.

According to the Atlas, the population of the basin in 1998 was 31.7 million compared to an estimated 40 million in 2008, with 7.5 million people living in urban centers. Most countries in the basin are urbanizing rapidly, putting pressure on finite resources.

The Atlas illustrates the deforestation of large areas surrounding Lilongwe in Malawi, among others, due to the high demand for firewood and land for farming by the growing population.

The Atlas shows mining as a major economic activity in the basin and satellite images reveal striking land-use changes as a result of mining activities, notably in Zambia.

The revival of copper mining at Kanshanshi and Lumwana mines in Solwezi in north-western Zambia has led to a population influx, resulting in the rapid but haphazard expansion of the town. As a result, surrounding forested areas have been cleared for firewood and peri-urban farming.

Sub-basins such as the Luangwa River, Lake Kariba, and the Kafue and Kabompo rivers have high concentrations of mining operations, contributing to water pollution in the Zambezi River.

In addition, highly urbanized sub-basins such as the Kafue and Manyame are discharging waste into the Zambezi river system.

The Atlas shows that industrial activities that general significant amounts of waste are of concern. About 1,400 tons of waste is produced daily in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, with only 10 percent collected by the municipality.

The Atlas shows that Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi together have 86 percent of the estimated 5.2 million hectares of the land area that is cultivated annually in the basin and that the use of fertilizers and agrochemicals are contributing to the growth of harmful aquatic plants in water bodies.

An unusual phenomenon is seen on the Savute River in Botswana, which was uncharacteristically dry for long periods but is now flowing, while Lake Liambezi in the Caprivi region of Namibia, which almost disappeared between 1985 and 2000, has also begun filling up.

Although water hyacinth growth is a problem throughout the basin, areas that are particularly affected are the Kafue Flats in Zambia, Lower Shire in Malawi, Lake Kariba between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and Lake Chivero in Zimbabwe where the Atlas provides satellite imagery of a 25-year battle against the invasive weed.

Despite the abundance of wildlife resources in the basin, the Atlas shows that there are pressures that are threatening the existence of animal species.

Species that have become extinct in the basin in recent years include the blue wildebeest in Malawi, the Tsetsebe in Mozambique, and the Kob in Tanzania.

The Atlas also highlights several trans boundary initiatives in various sectors that include those for wildlife, transport, water and energy.

For example, the basin contains the second deepest lake in Africa (third deepest in the world), which has different names in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania — Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa/ – and two huge artificial lakes created by the construction of major hydroelectric dams at Cahora Bassa in Mozambique and Kariba, managed by Zambia and Zimbabwe.

These two dams provide the bulk of the basin’s hydropower, together with the Kafue Gorge dam in Zambia.

Six vast Trans Frontier Conservation Areas (TFCA), have been established in various parts of the basin to coordinate management of wildlife and other resources, including the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) TFCA that covers 287,000 square kilometers over five countries (Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia) and is the largest TFCA in the world.

The Atlas concludes with a chapter outlining the various institutional arrangements and policy frameworks put in place to address the challenges in the Zambezi River basin.

These include the revised SADC Protocol on Shared Watercourses; the Regional Strategic Action Plan ion Integrated Water Resources Development and Management 2011-2015 (RSAP III); the SADC Strategy for the Water Sector on Climate Change Adaptation; the Zambezi Watercourse Commission Agreement; and, the ZAMCOM Integrated Water Management Strategy.

Meriwether Foundation, a South African entity, has expressed interest to set up a solar power plant in Mukuni chiefdom in Kazungula District of Southern Province at a cost of more than US$250 million.Senior Chief Mukuni said Meriwether Foundation had been given about 250 hectares of land in his chiefdom to set up the solar energy plant with a capacity to generate about 100 megawatts.

He said once all logistics were completed, the plant was expected to come on board next year and would feed into the main Zesco grid.

Senior Chief Mukuni was speaking on Tuesday afternoon when a delegation led by United States Ambassadors to Zambia and Zimbabwe, Mark Storella and Bruce Wharton, respectively, paid a courtesy call on him and his co-ruler Anna Siloka Bedyango.

“Just today I met the people trying the solar power plant in Mukuni chiefdom. We have just given them land and they will soon start processing their title deeds,” he said.

Senior Chief Mukuni said the project would be useful to the chiefdom which he noted had a lot of sunshine required to generate power.

And in a separate interview, Meriwether Foundation co-founder and President Nomvimbi Meriwether said the project would be beneficial to the local people.

Ms. Meriwether said the foundation had been given land in Zimba’s Manyemunyemu area for a rural health center.

Meriwether Foundation also has a health center in Livingstone’s Nottie Broadie area and employs 11 workers who include a doctor and a nurse.

“We normally attend to poor and malnourished children from Libuyu, Dambwa and Sakubita among other Livingstone townships,” she said.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Mukuni said Zambia has unique traditions to sell to the outside world.

“We have 73 tribes and each tribe holds an annual traditional ceremony which makes Zambia unique as other countries only have few ceremonies,” he said.

He said this year’s Bene Mukuni Traditional Ceremony would take place during the period of the United Nations World Tourism Organization general assembly in August to enable delegates to explore the ceremony.

The natives of the country call these edifices Symbaoe, which according to their language signifies court.”

Vicente Pegado, captain at the Portuguese Garrison of Sofala, in 1531, describing the Great Zimbabwe monuments.

It’s just after sunrise at the Great Zimbabwe monuments last Friday, climbing the Hill Complex, alone. Apart from the baboons, there is nobody else here, just me and the sound of baboons munching something nearby.

Each step, each pause, takes me closer to the silence of the imposing rocks. At the top, I am confronted by the massive wall of the Hill Complex, testimony to the architecture and skill of the ancestors gone by. And I struggle to bring the silence of rocks to reconcile with this spiritual presence that is hard and confusing to define.

But it is here all the same. I stand at the entrance and look at the breath-taking panoramic mountain vistas beyond. In me, there is a sense of fear, shame, pride and a desire to connect to a history that has stood here silently for centuries.

I was here at Great Zimbabwe Monument before, as a tourist with some friends from a church group a few years after independence. We came as tourists, something that you did to show that you were civilized enough to travel and see places the way white people did. You travelled to Lake Kariba, then Victoria Falls, where you enjoyed the serenity of the mighty Zambezi River and then to Hwange National Park. Then you got on the bus to Masvingo and Great Zimbabwe ruins.

You marveled at the architecture and listened to the great story of the Karanga people, who built Great Zimbabwe. You felt proud. However, because you are Zezuru, Tonga, Kalanga, Ndebele, Ndau or Manyika, you somehow do not pause to think you, too, belong to the ancestry of Great Zimbabwe.

What you do not know is that more than 500 years ago, the sub-dialects were not what they are now. We were all Africans and still are, despite linguistic differences. I took the tourist journey to Great Zimbabwe 25 years ago. That was just before I made the Diaspora journey to run away from the proximity of village poverty in Hwedza where I had grown up.

I yearned to eat and digest everything European and live in London, Melbourne and Los Angeles. And I did. I went to many tourist places including ancient ruins in Crete, the temples of India, Thailand and other places.

In 2007, we decided to take a trip to Machu Picchu, the 15th century ancient city built by the indigenous Inca of Peru in Latin America.

We climbed right up to the ancient ruins, on top of the Andes Mountains near the upper Amazon basin. I listened to the tour guide tell us about the wonders of this ancient civilization believed to have been a sanctuary or temple for high priests and the “Virgins of the Sun”.

I stood there among other tourists, thinking how much Machu Picchu was similar to Great Zimbabwe because the architecture is made without mortar and the granite stones are quarried and cut with such meticulous precision. During question time, like a good attentive tourist, I commented that back in my country called Zimbabwe we have similar ruins.

In fact, our country was named after the ruins, which means the House of Stone. An old English man quickly came over and hugged me like I was his long lost relative. He said he had been to Great Zimbabwe with his wife three times since Zimbabwe gained independence. “Like Machu Picchu, your country holds treasure. Great Zimbabwe is an amazing spiritual place.”

The Zimbabwe Bird

Then he took me aside and over coffee he went on to tell me about the Hill Complex, the Great Enclosure and the Valley and one of the eight soapstone birds found at Great Zimbabwe including the Monolith with Bird and Crocodile which is dated around 1400-1499. Here I was, at Machu Picchu in Peru, knowing very little of the monument and the Zimbabwe bird, our national heritage and the symbol of our national flag. Ah, the shame and the realization of not knowing where you come from.

There was an excuse to my shame and ignorance. Let me explain. Back in the days of Rhodesia when we lived under a racist colonial system, the history teachers said Great Zimbabwe was built by the Phoenicians.

We believed them. Then the missionaries kept reminding us that before the London Missionary Society, the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, the Berlin Mission and the Jesuit Zambezi Mission and all the others came to Africa, we were savage primitives caught in “unbridled lust and all the pernicious influences of heathen life”. Without Jesus, there was no history, only darkness.

The stories of white men’s involvement in the building of Great Zimbabwe had long circulated as written by the Portuguese captain quoted above. When the Portuguese traders arrived at Great Zimbabwe in the 16th century, they believed it to be the biblical city of Ophir, the legendary home of the Queen of Sheba, that African woman who travelled to Israel to see Solomon with all her gold and finery.

Their romance was well captured in the biblical Song of Solomon. But others said these impressive stone structures are the work of Egyptians, Phoenicians or the Christian king of lands beyond the Islamic realm. These speculations stayed for 400 years.

Meanwhile, Great Zimbabwe, the mystery of the silent stones, remained, hiding the history of our past, for there was nothing written. We did not write. We only told stories from generation to generation. The Europeans were not listening.

Four hundred years later, as the missionaries, hunters, explorers, gold diggers and colonialists flooded into present-day Matabeleland and Mashonaland, Karl Mauch, a German geologist, arrived at Great Zimbabwe monuments on Sunday, September 3 1871. In his diaries, he noted that a Karanga tribesman took him there to show him “dzimbahwe”, the scared city of stone where the local people claimed to hear drums playingat night. Mauch described the walls as beautifully curved undulating and bearing no mortar.

He looked at the soapstone and iron relics and said only “a civilized white nation must once have lived there.” Then he cut a piece of wood from a tree with red juices, (probably a Mubvamaropa tree) and concluded that this tree was unique and it could only have come from Lebanon with the Phoenicians.

After Karl Mauch’s findings, Cecil John Rhodes made a visit in 1890 and told the chiefs that he had come to look for “the ancient temple which once upon a time belonged to white men.” Rhodes then established the Ancient Ruins Company and financed James Theodore Bent from the British Association of Science. In 1892, Bent published The Ruined Cities of Mashonaland in which he said items found within the Great Zimbabwe complex proved that the civilization was not built by local Africans.

A few years later, Richard Hall was hired to investigate the Great Zimbabwe site. Hall asserted in his work, The Ancient Ruins of Rhodesia, that the civilization was built by “more civilized races” than the Africans. Hall deliberately dug two meters deep and destroyed archaeological evidence which pointed to the Shona people as builders of Great Zimbabwe.

In 1905, British archaeologist David Randall-Maclver came to Great Zimbabwe and studied the mud dwellings within the stone enclosures. He was the first European researcher to say that the dwellings were “unquestionably African in every detail”.

After 25 years, archaeologists led by Gertrude Caton-Thompson who had worked for many years in Egypt came and spent two years at Great Zimbabwe. Although a lot had been destroyed and stolen, Caton-Thompson found Persian bowls, Chinese celadon dishes, and Asian glassware. These twelfth to fifteenth century goods were evidence that there was a Shona and Indian Ocean trade link. Gertrude Caton-Thompson also examined the pottery style, wall decoration and the Karanga linguistic data and concluded that the ruins were of Shona origin.

This falsification of history was taught to us in primary schools. Takanyeperwa. It went on until Zimbabwean-born archaeologist Peter Garlake wrote the ground-breaking Great Zimbabwe published before independence. He said that neither the Queen of Sheba, the Europeans nor the Phoenicians, built Great Zimbabwe. Garlake confirmed that the ruins were of African origin built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries by the ancestors of the Shona people.

Like most people educated under the colonial Rhodesian system, we did not know that Great Zimbabwe was the largest single prehistoric structure in sub-Saharan Africa related to similar structures at Mapungubwe across the Limpopo on the South African side. It was one of 300 known stone enclosure sites on the Zimbabwe Plateau and it the largest ancient stone construction south of the Sahara.

The ruins cover nearly 1 800 acres and are divided into three distinct architectural groupings; the Hill Complex, the Valley Complex, and the Great Enclosure. The dry stone walls and earth dagga houses were built over of the African Iron Age, between AD1100-1500. Construction of the interior of the Great Enclosure began sometime in the early fourteenth century and its outer wall was built nearly 100 years later.

The Great Enclosure is most spectacular with an outer wall that is 278 meters long and up to 9,5m high. Inside it is a massive conical tower embodied with spiritual significance.

For 150 years, Great Zimbabwe was center of the most powerful Munhumutapa state in Southern Africa. At the height of its power, Great Zimbabwe was the center of a huge empire controlling vast lands between the Zambezi and the Limpopo rivers.

The ancient city of Great Zimbabwe could accommodate up to 20 000 people, royalty and slaves alike. People lived in 10 to 30 people in one family compound. They traded in gold, ivory, copper and bronze. Metal and iron tools came from Hwedza Mountains. The people lived on cattle, millet (zviyo) and sorghum (mapfunde) cultivation. Bananas came from Indonesia through trade with the Arabs.

One view of history says Great Zimbabwe began to lose control of the area it controlled from about 1400 when the importance of gold as an export commodity became scarce. There was more trade at Khami in south-west, which presented an economic advantage over Great Zimbabwe. By 1450 Khami had become the most important Zimbabwe capital.

Today, Great Zimbabwe embodies many aspects which are historic, aesthetic, scientific, social, spiritual and cultural. As a national monument, it forces us to construct, substantiate and challenge our personal, cultural and collective memory.

The national airline says commercial interlink agreements, for example between two airlines, that spread optimally across the world helps airlines to offer travel solutions to airline passengers.

“These commercial interline agreements help both airlines, as they enable both airlines to offer passengers travel solutions which if we did not have these agreements, neither airline could have been able to ‘catch’ those passengers, so they help increase access to markets we ordinarily would not have been able to participate in,” said the General Manager: Commercial Services, Air Namibia, Xavier Masule.

Masule was responding to written questions from New Era.

A local weekly recently reported “that during a recent trip to Dubai, Minister of Trade and Industry Calle Schlettwein, who led a Namibian delegation to the 3rd Annual Investment Meeting, told UAE Minister of Economy Sultan bin Al Mansouri that Air Namibia is in talks with Emirates Airlines about the possibility of flying to Namibia, or operating on some of its routes.”

Fast facts about Air Namibia:

But Air Namibia does not have any information about Emirates commencing flights into Namibia, explained Masule.

“It is difficult for us to comment clearly on this because we do not have the exact words expressed by the Honorable Minister to the delegates, in terms of whether he meant Emirates physically flying into Namibia or via commercial arrangements used in the industry such as code share or interline agreements. All we can say, which is per our knowledge, is that Air Namibia and Emirates Airlines have cooperation agreements in place, and we are already working with them using these agreements for traffic feeds into each other’s flights at airports such as Johannesburg, Harare, Lusaka and Accra,” said Masule.

“Our computerized passenger management solutions are already linked and we have interfaces in place for e-ticketing processing, and airport departure computerized systems talk to each other already,” said Masule.

Elaborating further on some of the cooperation agreements with other airlines, he said Air Namibia has partnered with Kenya Airways, in Europe with Air France, British Airways and Alitalia, in the Far East with Singapore Airlines, and in the west with US Airways and Delta Airlines.
